Name: Margaret Reinhardt

What Office do you hold? I am presently serving as your Chairperson of the Sun Valley General Improvement District (SVGID) and Secretary on the Western Regional Water Commission. I represent Sun Valley on the Stakeholders Working Group to study the Pyramid Hwy/US 395 connection. This will run through Sun Valley connecting Pyramid Hwy to US 395 up in the Parr/Dandini area.

Why are you the best candidate for this office?
I have the experience and I am seeking re-election. The learning curve for any Trustee is at least one year and in these times, with much at stake, experience does count.
I am familiar with the recent water legislation that has taken place and I understand the pitfalls that it could bring. I also know the players in this political battle.

I fully understand that every dollar the district spends, the rate payer (us) is paying the bill for it. Our customers are captive customers and your only representation is the Trustees that you elect. These are hectic economic times and not the time for the inexperienced. It serves you, the customer, best, to return experienced incumbents. I did not vote for the pool and park tax. This service was already being provided by Washoe County and there was no real need to put this expense on you. I put our office managers on salary and cut down on overtime payroll.

I want to protect our children and keep our parks safe: After the SVGID attained Park and Recreation Powers we became the official host the of Teen Dances (ages 13 to 17) under the recreational provision. I had language added to our Volunteer Policy in Oct 2010 to require fingerprinting and background checks for all persons wanting to work with children. In Feb. 2012 I brought the item back to the board because the procedure was not being followed. The board voted a second time to require finger printing and background checks for volunteers who desire to work with children.

The SVGID primarily serves as your water and sanitation department. We provide you with water and sewer. We buy water from Truckee Meadows Water Authority at wholesale prices and we do our best to pass the savings on to you. The Washoe County Board of Commissioners is your local governing body and Washoe County serves most of our governmental needs. The Trustees that you elect to the SVGID work closely with Washoe County representing Sun Valley on various boards and commissions.

I have lived in Sun Valley for 47 years and now 3 of my grandchildren are raising their family's in Sun Valley. No one could possibly care or love Sun Valley more than I do. I am against growth that does not pay for itself.

Educational Background/Prior Government Experience: Current Chairperson for the Sun Valley General Improvement District (SVGID). Past member Sun Valley Citizens Advisory Board. Secretary for WESTERN REGIONAL WATER COMMISSION, Past secretary for the Sun Valley Landowners/Residents Association, member of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for the 2007 Regional Area Plan, design team member for the proposed Red Hill Park in Sun Valley.

TMCC, Business Administration. Reno High, various classes provided by UNR including Boards and Committees, Small Water Utility Management, Completion of P.O.W.E.R. Training modules I and II. Lobbying and the Legislature, Federal Grants Workshop.
I personally contacted all parties who might be affected when the County proposed to widen 7th Ave., and worked to come up with an alternate route.
I actively worked to preserve the BMX track when its existence was in jeopardy.
I attend governmental meetings at the local and legislative level which could effect our lifestyles.

Reason for seeking this elected public office?
Together, Sun Valley and I have grown. I first moved to Sun Valley in 1965. I owned a 12x60 trailer. In 1968 I bought an unimproved piece of property on 7th Ave. I still reside on that piece of land but the 12x60 was replaced with a owner built wood frame house.

I sincerely care about the future of Sun Valley and the wishes of its residents.
Fifteen years ago I was shocked to find that our local officials had given tentative approval to put a freeway through the front yards of all the residents of 7th Ave. I was guilty of not being a political watchdog. I can relate to the person who is too busy just keeping up with everyday life to attend these meetings. 7th Ave. residents and the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) worked together and a less invasive route was created now known as Highland Ranch Parkway.

I stand against any action to incorporate Sun Valley or bring it under the sphere of influence of either Reno or Sparks. I also have concerns that Sun Valley could at some point in the near future become a grid of freeways to support the growth that is going on around us. We already have a severe traffic problem on Sun Valley Boulevard. Some of the residential streets are being burdened with traffic that is coming off 395 and the Spanish Springs area. Sun Valley is not generating this traffic.

The SVGID Board of Trustees meets at 6 pm the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Sun Valley General Improvement District Board Room, located at 5000 Sun Valley Blvd. in Sun Valley. (The Board Room is located on the lower level. Please use the Prosser Way entrance). Meetings are open to the general public.

The Sun Valley Landowners and Residents Association meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 6:00 PM of every month. 5360 Sun Valley Blvd. The Sun Valley Landowners building was constructed in 1944 on land given by the Gepford Family. From 1975 until 2005, Washoe County leased the building to house the Sun Valley Senior Center. The building continues to be run by a board which oversees the Food Pantry. The Association holds events such as bingo and has the hall available for party rentals and flea markets. If you would like to become a member call Charlotte at 673-6412.

We hold bingo games, craft fairs, bake sales, and Sun Valley's largest community garage sale. We are open to new suggestions. We are a non profit organization founded in 1948 for the greater good of the Sun Valley Community. The land was donated to the citizens of Sun Valley by the Gepford Family and is operated by a working board of directors who are elected by the vote of the membership. We invite you to come down and join the fun, there is something for everyone. Application form here.
